Earlier this week, registration closed for the world’s biggest and most prestigious fighting game tournament aka Evolution 2014. With players unable to register on the day to battle it out for over $100,000 in cash prizes, organisers were able to provide concrete figures for each game’s bracket; the highest numbers that have ever been registered in the 11 year history of Evo. The registration numbers are as follows.
- Ultra Street Fighter IV – 1979
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 1014
- Super Smash Bros. Melee – 970
- BlazBlue: Chronophantasma – 508
- Killer Instinct – 338
- King of Fighters XIII – 319
- Injustice: Gods Among Us – 311
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2 – 257
Unsurprisingly, headlining act Ultra Street Fighter IV leads the pack with almost 2000 competitors, followed by Capcom’s other franchise Marvel vs Capcom 3 (ie WHEN’S MAHVEL!??????) with just over 1000. The top three this year is rounded out by the resurging Super Smash Bros. Melee community, which came within a whisker of stealing second place. After the success of Melee in recent years, it’s great to see it back at this year’s event.
It’s also worth noting that 836 players will be travelling from outside of the United States, hailing from 46 different countries showcasing yet another great example of the diversity of the fighting game community especially when compared to other genres in esports.
“Evo’s primary mission is to provide a common meeting ground for fighters all over the world to come together not just to compete, but to make new friends and share a common love for these great games,” stated tournament organiser Tom Cannon. “We’re incredibly happy and humbled that Evo’s international presence continues to grow year after year”.
Evo 2014 is scheduled for July 11-13 at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Be sure to check out the event’s official website for more information.
